Wismar Germany

Wismar

Hanseatic Wismar, with Stralsund, is listed as a UNESCO world-heritage city for its historical streetscapes. Its treasures include north German Gothic architecture, including the Alter Schwede, a 14th century building that recalls the long period of control by Sweden, which built a large Baroque armoury about 1700.

There are four red-brick Gothic churches - one of which remains only as a tower, but the 13th century Heiligen-Geist-Kirche, part of a vanished hospital, is remarkable for its wooden ceiling, wall painting, and early 16th century altar.

Lübsche Straße, particularly its south side, is a stretch of restored, sometimes remodelled 16th and 17th century buildings. Characteristic stepped gables line Krämerstraße and Bohstraße.
