Wernigerode Germany

Wernigerode

Wernigerode, ‘the Harz’s town of colours’ owes its epithet to the structures that survive in the late medieval town centre. Hundreds of half-timbered buildings dating from the late 14th century to the 19th and most are restored in grand style.

One is the 16th century town hall, whose two striking towers help make it one of Germany's favourite photographs.

Sections of medieval town wall with towers complete a picturesque scene for walks. The hill Agnesberg, with a restored Romantic castle, completes the setting.

Wernigerode is an ideal place to board the Harz's steam tourist railway.
