Ulm Germany

Ulm

Ulm was a prominent medieval city on the Danube and today preserves much of its 12th to 15th century walls and high gate towers. The remarkable frescoes on the exterior of its town hall show events from the city's history, including a 17th century attempt to fly across the river.

The spire of the Gothic Münster is still the tallest church spire in the world at more than 160 metres.

A rare surviving feature is tiny 17th century houses built for soldiers that line parts of the city defences along Seelengraben. The Fischerviertel precinct of half-timbered houses is built around a canal network.

From the 16th century Ulm was again fortified with a huge wall circuit and mighty bastions, including the 19th century Wilhemsburg redoubt above the old town.
