The most beautiful cities in Germany

All these places can be reached  by train and bus (Quedlinburg is on a branch line). All offer a range of hotels, hostels, guest houses and other types of accommodation. All are very walkable and, like most German towns and cities, are really best seen on foot. But trams and buses help get people to and from hotels or attractions and for the bigger centres, Berlin, Hamburg, Munich, Cologne, Stuttgart, Düsseldorf and Nuremberg, there are fast regular options in the form of S-Bahn and U-Bahn trains and light-rail transport.

Lutherstadt Wittenberg

The old town is dominated by monuments connected with Martin Luther, who launched the Reformation in Wittenberg. The church where it is said Luther posted his 95 theses in defiance of the Catholic church still stands, along with the market church where he preached. The house where he lived is a museum of his life.

Luther's close associate, the Renaissance artist Lucas Cranach the elder, and his collaborators Philipp Melanchthon and Johannes Bugenhagen have also left monuments. Cranach's works from the period can be studied in churches and town museums. There is also the university Luther founded.

Much the Wittenberg that Luther lived and worked in remains, making it the ideal location for the annual festival celebrating the anniversary of his wedding.
