Cochem

There is no doubt this picturesque small town on a Moselle bend is a tourist centre. It has wine from local plantations, town gates, towers, half-timbered facades and gables, shops and cafes. 

But what marks it out from most towns in the region is its scenic opportunities. A chairlift ride offers easy access to breathtaking river views. 

The striking Reichsburg castle above the town is originally from the 11th or 12th century, although rebuilt in a Romantic Neogothic style in the 19th century. It also provides a spectacular view. It's also a pleasant base for hiking paths, cycling, or visits to the medieval castle Burg Eltz.
