Bautzen Germany

Bautzen

The upper Lusatian town is intriguing for its appearance and towers, which give the impression of a hilltop fortress. But Bautzen's main significance is in being the cultural centre of Germany's largest native ethnic minority, the Sorbs (who call the small city Budyšin). The Slavic upper Lusatian language is represented on city signs and there is a local museum of Sorbian artefacts.

Bautzen was also the location for prisons operated by the Nazis and communist GDR regime, which are now memorial sites.
