Austria Wiener Neustadt

Wiener Neustadt

The medieval city was on the front line of military threats in its early centuries and a fortress was built. The the emperor Maximilian I, who reconquered Wiener Neustadt from the Hungarians, was buried under the altar of the St Georgs-Kathedrale in the fortress, which later became a military academy.

Parts of the city walls remain, as does the restored medieval cathedral Dom Mariä Himmelfahrt.
